Power Radio FM 99 (commonly known as Power 99) is one of the many commercial FM radio channels which were launched during the media boom era in Pakistan during the early 2000s. Power 99, which is owned by a group known as The Communicators (Pvt) Ltd, is currently running its transmission from Islamabad, Abbottabad and Vehari. Power 99 got its license from the Federal Government of Pakistan under Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA)[2] and started its test transmission from 23 March 2003. The channel became popular within no time and currently it is providing 24 hours entertainment and information to its listeners.[3]
Power 99 started its test transmission on 23 March 2003, just within three months of obtaining License from (PEMRA). Its transmitter is installed at Sector G-11, Markaz in Islamabad. Power 99 is covering an aerial distance of approximately 70 km radius which enables it to cover all big and small cities and towns in and around Islamabad. Power 99 is one of the few radio stations which is equipped with latest sophisticated broadcast machinery and trained professionals.[3]
Besides entertainment and Infotainment, one of the main objective of the channel is to highlight some of the important social, ethical and religious problems which are faced by the general public in a much more creative way. Another objective is To promote the neglected people in the society including the religious minorities so that they can regain their self-esteem and in this way, they can contribute in the society positively.[3]
Power 99 is often criticized by the general public for giving more preference to Indian music over Pakistani music. It is a general perception that Power 99 plays more percentage of Indian Bollywood and pop music as compared to Pakistani music. According to Power 99 management, they do so on the demand of the majority of the public and that they are free to play Indian music under the PEMRA Rules and Regulations.
In September 2007, Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) issued a notice to the channel management for airing unethical contents in a sponsored program. The Authority said that it had received several complaints from the listeners regarding the contents of the show.[4]
